School

Imagine Reading Rainbow meets Netflix, but with Kristen Jeffers, founder of The Black Urbanist and Kristpattern multimedia platforms as your guide through books, essays, podcasts and other things that explain how cities work through the eyes of Black women, Black queer people and Black trans people.  Plus, some bonus crafting videos with Kristen and other Black crafters and makers!

Supplement your:

  • Professional training
  • Published articles/stories
  • Teaching curriculum
  • Degree requirements
  • Children’s lessons
  • Faith-based curriculum

With lessons taught by a Black queer feminist/womanist urbanist, using content from Black women, Black queer people and Black trans people that intersect with urbanism and related fields.

Currently, the school is in a pilot phase, with two sections of people, both reading along chapter by chapter with the book Chocolate Cities: A Black Map of American Life.

  • A Black, Indigenous and other marginalized person of color (BIPOC) section on a sliding-scale, powered by Mighty Networks
  • A White/White-aligned person section available by pledging at least $40 on my Patreon.

Check out a sample lesson, breaking down the Black American Map created by the Chocolate Cities authors.

Meet the authors, through our school launch conversation here.

Later this year, we will be launching the following courses on Teachable. Our pilot sections will remain and will have first access to these courses in their respective platforms.

  • Intro to Black Queer Feminist Urbanism
  • Becoming a Chocolate City Theorist
  • Non-Cis Black Male Political Power and Urbanism
  • Media for Planners and Placemakers
  • Sustainable Urbanist Craft-Making

These course sections will be flexible and will be available to view at any time, in any order.

Individual course licenses will be available starting at $40.

Special rates will be available for educational, nonprofit and large institutional clients.

Please reach out to me (kristen@theblackurbanist.com) if you would like to license the school for a large group.
